History | Laurence (Laurie) Wyman was born at Barmera, South Australia on 2 November 1929 to Charles and Florence Isabel Wyman. He attended Barmera Primary School and Glossop High School before moving to Adelaide in 1946 and commenced the Associate Diploma course in Architecture at the South Australia School of Mines and Industries.
After completing two years full time study, Wyman obtained a job and continued his studies part time. He graduated with an Associate Diploma in Architecture in 1957.
Laurie Wyman obtained a position in 1948 as a junior draftsman with Lawson Cheesman and Doley. He then moved to a job with the South Australian Housing Trust as an Architectural Draftsman in 1950. Eighteen months later Wyman was offered back his position at Lawson Cheesman and Doley which he took. In 1958, he was appointed an Associate of the firm, in charge of the Mount Gambier office, and in 1961 became a Director/Partner. When the Cheesman Doley Neighbour and Raffen (originally Lawson Cheesman and Doley) amicably divided in 1978, Wyman joined the firm Haddrick Harris Wyman Architects where he worked for a further 9 years. In 1987, one of the firms’ partners expressed his wish to retire, and so the doors to Haddick Harris Wyman Architects closed. Wyman however continued to work from home as a sole practitioner until his retirement from architectural practice in 1992.
Wyman worked on many different project types such as banks, offices, warehouses, churches, cinemas and residences. Notable Works include the Remark Hotel, Barmera Hotel, Kingsway Motors, Johnson & Johnson Warehouse, Civic Theatre, Millicent District Hospital, Barmera District Hospital, Kingston Hospital, Alice Springs Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre and the Booleroo Centre Hospital. Wyman was both a Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects and an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
